5 different patients with same diagnosis


 




Clefts in the brain parenchyma that extend from the cortical surface to the ventricle (pia to ependyma) lined by dysplastic gray matter.

Diagnosis: SCHIZENCEPHALY

Frontal and parietal lobes near central sulcus is the most common location.

Closed lip lesions are small, with walls apposed to each other.

Open lip lesions can be very large mimicking hydranencephaly.

50% are bilateral.

Can be due to acquired insult or inherited mutation.

Intrauterine insults include CMV, maternal trauma or toxin exposure.

 

Differential Diagnosis:

Porencephaly-Lined by gliotic white matter

Hydranencephaly

Semi lobar Holoprosencephaly

Agenesis of corpus callosum with interhemispheric cyst

 

Dimple in wall of lateral ventricle-look for closed lip schizencephaly.

Angle of wall-PVL

Lump on wall-GM heterotopia or subependymal nodules of Tuberous sclerosis.
